Open project development Henschel Areal Kassel launched with workshop process

In the coming years, a new quarter will be built on the former production site of the former railroad manufacturer Henschel. As development partner, BÜRO DR. VOGEL GMBH, together with the owner Sector Seven Investors GmbH, has launched an open project development for the site in Kassel Rothenditmold. This began with a workshop process that took place between the beginning of September and the beginning of November 2023.

The workshop process comprised two expert dialogs, a citizens' dialog and a workshop on monument protection, which took place at the Technik Museum Kassel. The aim was to engage in an open-ended and creative dialog with politicians, administrators, businesses and citizens and to jointly develop ideas for the approximately 10-hectare Henschel Areal. The results of the workshop process form the basis for the subsequent urban planning competition. This is expected to take place in the first half of 2024.

The former Henschel factory Rothenditmold was built in 1871 as one of three large factories of the Henschel & Sohn company in Kassel and was continuously expanded until the 1970s. After the closure of the factory, various art, media and cultural institutions, including the Technik Museum Kassel, settled here. Some of the former production halls are now used for storage. The former factory site is now to be given a new future with the open project development and developed into a lively quarter.
